A It is really hard to say what the
greatest game of all time is, though Q III would have to rate pretty
high. Recently I have enjoyed playing JK II and SOF II
Q What aspects strike you as the
most personally rewarding about being an Instructor of Goju Kai
Karate?
A I like working with people. It
is really rewarding to see students develop. When they first begin
they find it very hard to coordinate everything. It takes quite
a while, a least six months but then things begin to fall in place
they begin to develop their own technique and spirit. It is something
for which you need a lot of determination and perseverance.
Q What advice would you give to
people who are looking to obtain their Black Belt?
A There is a much repeated story,
most marital arts tell their own version - about the student who
asks how long will it take to get a black belt. The teacher replies
with an answer to test the student i.e. "it could take 10
years". The student then asks "what if I train twice
as hard?". The teacher replies, "Then it will take 20."
While naturally hard training will help, something else is more
important. Everyone is different, everyone has different abilities,
disposition etc. - what you need first of all is determination,
perseverance and commitment. It could take three years or five
or longer. Although the instructor is there to guide you, ultimately
everyone has to find there own way. If you keep going eventually
you will find this way.
Q What is your favourite Kata in
Karate, and do you have any personal Kata in the works?
A The main kata I practice at the
moment is Seiunchin, this is actually a very difficult kata because
it has a lot of Seiko Dachi (horse stance). I am also working
on Sanseru.
Q What do you do in your spare time
to relax?
A What's that? Seriously, watch
movies etc I do a lot of stuff on the computer, I would like to
find more time to do more with music.
Q Has training in Goju Kai Karate
made you more spiritual? If so, how has it changed daily life?
A I wouldn't say training in karate has made me more spiritual,
however practicing a kata is like practising meditation in fact
all karate training can be treated in the way.
Q How would you describe yourself
as a person - if some was looking to join one of your classes,
how would they approach you?
A Oh, I am quite approachable. I
deal with people all the time so no one should have an reservations
about asking me about anything.
Q What is your favourite Martial
Arts film? Why?
A It is hard to tie myself down
to one favourite because there are quite a few types of marital
arts films nowadays. There is the Matrix type, the fantasy type
like Crouching Tiger then there are comedies like Rush Hour I
and II. Actually I really like anything with Jet Li he is really
something. I also like anything with Jackie Chan, I love the stunts
and the way he can make fun of himself. I also like Crouching
Tiger too mainly because of the use of the sword.
