Chief Instructor, Bernie Haughey, has trained in traditional Goju Kai Karate for more than twenty years. Through a love & passion for Karate, he has dedicated his life to Martial Arts and helping others, by guiding them to follow, ‘the way’.

At 13 he started training in Martial Arts. In 1983, at age 19 years, Bernie Haughey started training in Goju Kai. He enjoyed Goju Kai’s explosive style, the hard training, and the challenges of traditional Martial Arts. Goju Kai Karate is personified by the perfect balance of Go = Hard, Ju = Soft, Karate = Empty hand and Do = Way.

In 1992 Bernie Haughey represented Australia in Hong Kong Karate Championships, gaining two 3rd places in the Open and Heavy Weight fighting divisions. Bernie has trained overseas in Japan, under the guidance of Japanese Masters.
In 1993 Bernie moved from New South Wales to Queensland and established Goju Kai Karate branches in Brisbane in 1999. Students from Bernie Haughey's Schools have become widely respected in the Martial Arts arena. Due to AGKK’s unique approach to teaching and high standards, whole families that have embraced the life-enriching experience of training in martial arts.

Bernie Haughey has laid the foundations for his long-term commitment to the Australian community by establishing Australian Goju Kai Karate (or Club AGKK). AGKK prides itself upon excellence in Martial Arts, specializing in a broad array of services, and public & custom-private tuition.

Bernie Haughey conducts regular seminars for people in the service, tertiary, and education industries. Bernie Haughey also has a Bachelor of Education and a Diploma of Teaching. He has specialist training in ‘Kubudo’, or Japanese Weapons. He has represented his State & Australia at National and International Tournaments and is a member of the All-Japan Karate-do Federation Goju Kai. Bernie Haughey is also a board member of the Australian Traditional Karate Federation.
