An Interview with BERNIE HAUGHEY
AGKK Chief Instructor

What made you choose Japanese Goju Kai Karate as opposed to other forms of Martial Arts?

The development of Zen is an important part of the curriculum. I liked how the techniques of discipline help a person’s mind gain more clarity. I liked the traditional Japanese Karate curriculum, with a proven and respected history contributed to and very effectively developed by Martial Arts Masters. It is indeed an art form which develops the entire person –

their mind, body & spirit. It incorporates defence & offence. It has taught me the fundamentals of learning: that to learn effectively, you must be open to new knowledge & not think that you know all of the answers. It has taught me you must show respect, courtesy, self-discipline & loyalty if you are going to learn effectively & gain the trust of the instructor.

When used for the purposes of justice, Goju Kai Karate is devastating and has few equals.

Goju Kai Katas are not only beautiful, but its secret techniques harness the biomechanics of the body & natural flow of energy that we can all tap into put into positive life uses.

What highlights or achievements stand out as memorable to you in AGKK history? What positive aspect about running the club gives you the most pleasure to see?

When I first came to Sunny Queensland, shortly after a settling in period, I was approached by some students who asked me if I could teach them the traditional Goju Kai Karate. I said I would be happy to teach them. There is no greater pleasure than helping others in their development. Helping other people brings me much happiness.

Since then I have never looked back. Many students have given me their highest recommendation & passed on the good work we are doing at AGKK to their family & friends. The amount of mutual respect fellow students show each other is amazing.

It is a great pleasure to not only see students improve in

their Karate development, but seeing & hearing how it has helped them in many aspects of their lives is equally pleasurable. For example: fitness, confidence, direction, improvements at school, work & even family life etc.
It is also great to see how many students want to become involved in the club activities, whether they be in helping other students in their development, planning & being part of AGKK social activities.

What is the future vision for AGKK? What goals or aspirations do you hold for the club?

I would like AGKK to help as many people in Australia as possible, including the very young to our important aged members in our community. My vision for AGKK is to incorporate not only individuals, but also community groups, organizations & businesses in our endeavours.

Goals are outlined in our mission statement, however I think it is important to highlight some of these – To enhance, cultivate & develop self-discipline, respect, co-operation, self-esteem, positive goals & attitudes. To promote high standards for techniques & concept taught. To provide criteria that adheres to the Traditional Goju Kai Curriculum. To educate people, through Karate, in the spirit of a better understanding themselves and to make positive contributions to all people around them.
