HOW AUSTRALIAN
GOJU KAI KARATE CAME TO BRISBANE
Sensei Bernie Haughey arrived in
Queensland in the 1990. Both he and his wife, Sharon
were enjoying themselves on holiday from Sydney, N.S.W., when

were involved in a car accident
in Brisbane. Luckily, no one was hurt.
We were without a car for
a few weeks and had an extended stay in Brisbane. It must have
been destiny. We always liked the pace of life, people and climate
of Brisbane. Sharon also had relatives in Queensland. It was because
of the accident and our extended stay that we came across a house
that we liked in Brisbane and decided to buy it.

After they moved up to Queensland,
Bernie starting teaching at a local high school in Brisbane. After
many years training in Traditional Japanese Karate with colleagues
in southern New South Wales, and overseas, Bernie continued his
dedicated practice of Karate daily by himself. He missed, however,
training with and helping others.
This did not take long
One
of Bernies, wifes relatives, was watching him train
in the garage, hitting and punching a heavy bag, and asked if
he could train with Bernie and learn the ancient martial art.
Bernie casually agreed.
There is no greater pleasure
than me helping others.
Some additional children from
the area later also approached Bernie, and asked if he could
teach them. Bernie accepted them. He started teaching in his
home garage, however needed more space.
I decided to open up a Dojo
at Sandgate, for more space and where I could help train many
more people. I really enjoyed the opportunity to Instruct again,
because I taught students in Sydney.

I will never forget the first
night of opening, one of my first students was a giant man of
6 foot 6 inches. He could hardly fit under the door when entering
the Dojo. His friend was very short.
In the early days of my teaching
I was probably quite hard, however as time progressed I realized
that a student needs to acclimatize to the demands, as their mind
and body gradually becomes more accustomed to the challenging
demands of Goju Kai Style.
Over time, news spread around town
of Bernie Haugheys classes in Traditional Goju Kai Karate,
and more and more people from around the Brisbane area began him
for lessons. Bernies number of students grew to require up to
2 more Dojos for training.
Today, Bernie is dedicated to expanding
his Australian Karate Club, which is proficient in the arts &
philosophies of Traditional Japanese Karate. Australian Goju Kai
Karate prides itself on excellence in self-defence training and
in the sharing of Zen philosophy for the intended purpose to help
people in the wider Brisbane community.
