In a study conducted by the Australian Institute of Criminology, research revealed that approximately 15 assaults occur in Australia every hour. Of these figures, '2' assaults per hour of these 15 are of a sexual nature.

Across all age groups, females are more likely to be victims of sexual assaults than males, with 75% of all sexual assaults carried out on people below the age of 25 years.

The startling facts are these: 38% of all assaults carried out occur in community locations, with 20% of them being sexual offenses.

Assault: the direct infliction of force, injury, or violence upon a person, including attempts or verbal threats.

Sexual Assault: is physical assault of a sexual nature, directed toward another person where that person:

does not give consent; or
gives consent as a result of intimidation or fraud; or
is legally deemed incapable of giving consent because of youth or temporary/permanent incapacity.
This offence includes: sexual assault, sodomy, oral sex, incest, unlawful sexual intercourse, indecent assault, assault with intent to rape, and rape.
